Worth Your Weight

The Fat Liberation feed owner, Big Liberty, removed my blog from the feed without warning because of the post I made July 18, 2008. Ultimately, the reason my blog was taken off the feed is because, in her opinion, I did not zealously enough challenge the critical comments on said post.

I don’t agree with how and why I was removed from the feed. However, I am OK with being off of it. I truly do not want to be on the feed after the way this situation was handled.

I’m honestly not trying to cause trouble, and I don’t mean to offend any of BL’s friends and supporters (shoot, I thought I was one). I just want some things set straight, and then it’s full speed ahead onto more important concerns.

Big Liberty’s page about the feed has always said:

We want to hear your opinions, we want to know why you think what you think, without fear of being thrown off the feed without warning.

After she removed my blog without warning, I suggested in comments that the above be edited. BL replied by changing it to:

We want to hear your opinions, we want to know why you think what you think, without fear of being thrown off the feed without warning, unless you engage in trolling.

Now, BL knows I was not trolling and has since explicitly agreed I was not trolling. My concern at this point is that others on the feed or those thinking of joining be aware that your blog could possibly/maybe/tiny chance/you-never-know be removed without warning for reasons not outlined on the feed page.

The post she took issue with did not violate any feed rules at the time it was made. The only rule about the FL feed on July 18th was no diet/WLS talk. Hell, the post doesn’t even violate the new rule about trolling. As I said, BL herself even now agrees it was not, in fact, trolling.

Basically, my point is that I deserved the benefit of the doubt and in all fairness should have been given a warning by BL that she took issue with the post — not “punished” for it.

It was jarring enough to have that happen the way it did. But coming from someone I’ve always been friendly with? And because of a post that was intended to 100 percent support the subject and 100 percent ridicule a critic of that subject? Just totally out of left field and … I don’t know. Depressing?

  1. I went to see what the fuss was about, and the only post for July on BL’s site is her one about being on hiatus. I subscribe to all the blogs I read regularly through Google reader, so I don’t miss anything if a blog is taken off any of the FA feeds (just because a moderator of a feed may have a problem with a blogger doesn’t mean I will, and I resent the fact that an individual thinks she/he needs to censor what anyone reads about FA). FA needs a diversity of opinions in order to stay vibrant and keep moving ahead. Censorship over minor disagreements doesn’t allow that (which is why I subscribe to blogs and pretty much ignore the feeds anymore). Keep on commenting, I’ll be reading what you have to say, whether I always agree with you or not. At the very least, I’ll come away with something to think about.

  2. Thank you so much, Vesta. I enjoy reading your blog immensely, and your comment here is great.

[ETA: The post in question is the one here on my blog made July 18, ’08. I didn’t want to leave you hanging. I’ve been there, and it was frustrating not to know the source of the fuss LOL]

  3. I’ve actually just voluntarily removed myself from the FL feed after a post attacking Shapely Prose and its writers appeared on BL’s blog. Why are we attacking each other? What good could that do? It made me very sad, and I decided I didn’t want to be associated with the feed any longer, especially knowing what had happened with you, as well.
That said, I’ve been following you on my own blog reader and love reading what you have to say. :)

  4. Thank you, Julia! I’m with you: less fighting and more solidarity would be great.
